A community’s food system

A community’s food system is comprised of many factors that play a role in the distribution of diets and health. Wealth distribution is directly related, but so is a community’s level of engagement to improve it’s food system and address the inequities within it.

Read and reflect on the following article, “Realizing Justice in Local Food Systems” by Patricia Allen (2010).

Please write a 500-750 word essay that reflects on the following questions:

  1. What does social justice in the food system look like to you?
  2. The author writes, “Local food movements cannot be held responsible for rectifying the scope of injustices of the past. At the same time, geography is not a defensible arbiter of the scope of caring, action, or understanding.” Do you think we should have some particular responsibility to those who are more local to us? Why or why not?
  3. What are some of the ways that you can promote equity in the food system?
